ISHS Acta Horticulturae 289: International Symposium on Plant Biotechnology and its Contribution to Plant Development, Multiplication and Improvement

THE ROLE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY IN THE MULTIPLICATION AND IMPROVEMENT OF WOODY PLANTS

Author:   O.P. Jones
Abstract:
Methods, applications and future prospects for propagation in vitro with woody plants are described with emphasis on recent developments with adult plants. Methods include propagation by axillary shoot proliferation and adventitious regeneration from explants, cells or protoplasts. Applications include mass propagation and the production of apparently rejuvenated clones. Prospects are considered for propagation by somatic embryogenesis and for genetic manipulation through ploidy change, somaclone production, protoplast fusion and Agrobacteria-mediated gene transfer.
