ISHS Acta Horticulturae 288: VI International Symposium on Pollination

DEVELOPMENT OF A METHOD FOR MASS PRODUCTION OF THE POLLINATOR AND APHID PREDATOR EPISYRPHUS BALTEATUS DEG. (DIPTERA, SYRPHIDAE)

Authors:   I. TORNIER, W. DRESCHER
Abstract:
The hoverflies (Syrphidae) are only second to the hymenoptera as important pollinators. Furthermore approximately 40% of the 800 palearctic syrphid species are aphidophagous. So they are classified as beneficial insects. The poster demonstrates a method for mass rearing of Episyrphus balteatus. These flies are required for pesticide evaluation. Also their importance as pollinators and predators of aphids especially under greenhouse conditions is presently tested. More than 1000 flies/month can be raised under simple laboratory conditions, where the aphid supply as food of the syrphid larvae is the limiting factor.
