ISHS Acta Horticulturae 288: VI International Symposium on Pollination

THE EFFECT OF POLLINATION OF APPLE TREES BY POLLEN OF ORNAMENTAL APPLE TREES

Authors:   K. Szklanowska, B. Dabska
Abstract:
The utility of ornamental apple trees as pollinators in commercial orchards was studied. Two variants of flower pollination were used manual and under small isolators by individual honey bees, covered with pollen of a particular pollinator. Flowers pollinated freely were used as control.

The rate of setting fruit, their size and shape, the number of seeds set in them, the content of certain. chemical substances were analysed and the taste was estimated organoleptically. It appeared that the effect of both ways of commercial apple tree pollination was similar to the effect of free pollination by insects. It shows the possibility of using ornamental apple trees as pollinators in commercial orchards in natural conditions of Poland, too.

Incidentally, it was ascertained that in experimentation one may use individual honey bees for flower pollination with a strictly qualified pollen in a small isolator. This means is markedly cheaper and easier than manual pollination.
