ISHS Acta Horticulturae 288: VI International Symposium on Pollination

INSECT POLLINATORS OF THE WEST AFRICAN HARDWOOD (TERMINALIA IVORENSIS A. CHEV.)

Author:   O. Oni
Abstract:
Insect pollinators of Terminalia ivorensis A. Chev. were studied in plantations located on the ground of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, Ibadan and Ikom Forest Reserve, Cross River State, Nigeria. The frequency and distributions of the insects as well as pollen carriage by each insect species were monitored. Observations were also made on the floral structures and the duration of anthesis in the tree.

The inflorescence of T. ivorensis is a spike and andromonoecious. Complete anthesis of the flowers occur within 6 days. Eight insect species from seven families were identified as pollinators of T. ivorensis flowers in Nigeria. Pollinator visits and abundance varied overtime with the peak occurring between 1100 and 1200 hrs of the day. The family Calliphoridae represented by Chrysomaya chlorophyga Weid and Lucilia euprina Weid. were the major pollinators and pollen carriers of the flowers of T. ivorensis. Both insects carried about 2,100 and 1,660 pollen grains respectively.
