INSECT POLLINATION IN SOME CUCURBITS |

| Abstract:
All cucurbits are insect pollinated. Pollination mechanisms of four crepuscular and nocturnal cucurbits was studied in details and polyphilic behaviour in general was revealed. Still each species was characterised by specific insect pollination. Lagenaria siceraria and Luffa acutangula have crepuscular blooming, whereas Momordica dioica and Trichosanthes cucumerina have nocturnal blooming. These four cucurbits are respectively pollinated by bug, hawk moth, beetle and pyrilid moth. The beetle and bug pollinated cucurbits have pest type of pollinators. Changing bloosom state and environmental factors make these cucurbits to respond to other polytropic type of insect pollinators. | |
