BEE-PLANTS EXPLOITATION MAP

Authors:   A. Cervello, J. Loidi
Abstract:
With this map we try to stablish the potential of the different types of vegetation included in the area of Bizkaia (North of the Iberian Peninsula) for honeybees.

We've composed a map of vegetation in scale 1:50.00 and, with this map, we've selected those formations that could be exploited by the bee-keepers. The communities with nectariferous flowers have been selected, because of the nectar disponibility being the limitating factor of honey production in the north of the Peninsula.

The valoration of honey production has been performed on the base of a methodic texting of the nectar breeding of those species that make up the communities. We've also taken into account the phenological rhythms, an essential aspect related to the supply of nectar throughout the active period of bees.

The conjunction of the intrinsic melifere potential of each formation with their fenological rhythms, as well as the general ones: optimal phenological succesion of differents formations inhabitating in certain zones, will decide the succes of a profitable apiculture in each region.
