ISHS Acta Horticulturae 288: VI International Symposium on Pollination

ESTIMATE OF OUTCROSSING RATE BETWEEN 2 LINES OF FIELD BEANS (VICIA FABA) IN VARIOUS CONDITIONS WITH ISOZYMIC MARKERS

Authors:   S. Carré, J.N. Taséi, J. Mesquida, J. Le Guen
Abstract:
A good appraisal of genes dispersal by insects visits is a need for plant breeders. Our research was aimed at measuring the efficacy of bees in cross pollination of 2 lines of field beans.

The line D-27 was totally self fertile and the line D-23 less self fertile needed tripping. A 2 rows field pattern was used to grow both lines alternatively and three treatments replicated 3 times were applied to cross pollinate them : 1) caged honeybees, 2) cages Bumblebees, 3) open pollination.

Distinction of both lines was possible by the patterns of shikimate dehydrogenase and alcohol dehydrogenase and 150 mature seeds were sampled on each line to detect crossings by zymograms.

  1. Honey bees and Bumblebees visits resulted in identical outcrossing rates.
  2. The self-fertile line D-27 seemed less allogamous than the line D-23 (7% and 16% of outcrossing respectively).
  3. A parallel study of pollen and genes dispersal in field beans is envisaged.
