ISHS Acta Horticulturae 288: VI International Symposium on Pollination

POLLEN AND FLOWER FRAGRANCES IN POLLINATION

Author:   H. E.M. Dobson
Abstract:
Analyses of headspace volatiles from pollen and flowers demonstrate that the chemical composition of pollen odors varies between species and includes compounds typical of floral fragrances. When entire flowers and isolated pollen are compared, their volatile profiles are found to range from nearly identical in some species to distinctly different in others. Behavioral field studies of bumble bees foraging on Rosa rugosa provide evidence that pollen odor can influence which flowers bees visit by signalling the presence of pollen reward.
