Abstract:
Agricultural and apicultural experts in Sweden discuss if honeybees are important for the pollination and fruitset of strawberries.
This study was conducted in order to supplement the available with local data.
Honeybee colonies were placed at one end of a long strawberry plantation for home consumption.
The fruit production and berry size was recorded regularly at two distances from the beehives.
The study was repeated during two subsequent years.
Honeybees were found to be very important for the shape and size of the fruit and thus also for the economic output of the production.
The total fruit production per acreage was not affected significantly.
The experimental method tested was found to be very simple and cheap but not advisable to try over a period of two years only.
