ISHS Acta Horticulturae 288: VI International Symposium on Pollination

RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF FERAL HONEY BEES IN APPLE POLLINATION

Authors:   S.Y. Chang, R.A. Hoopingarner
Abstract:
Feral honey bees contributed a significant amount to apple pollination in Michigan. We compared the ratio of marked (all foragers of managed colonies) to unmarked (feral) honey bees; among different orchard blocks (ratio = 0.14), among different varieties (ratio = 0.24), and among different days (ratio = 0.24). There was a very high population of feral honey bees evenly distributed during the bloom period. During peak bloom, many more feral honey bees were found (ratio <0.10) both in different blocks and in different varieties.
