Abstract:
The development of managed populations of bees as sustainable crop pollinators has always been initiated with fundamental biological studies.
The accumulated information gained from these baseline data has then been used to develop management programs designed to maximize the nesting potential of each species as the best method to assure adequate pollination of targeted crops.
This paper attempts to outline how agricultural environments have changed in the last 80 years and the effect these changes have had on the pollination requirements for many crops.
The utilization of non-honey bee species as crop pollinators is emphasized as a viable alternative method of meeting future pollination needs in rapidly changing agricultural environments.
