ISHS Acta Horticulturae 288: VI International Symposium on Pollination

POLLINATION OF GREENHOUSE TOMATOES BY BEES

Authors:   H.J. Banda, R.J. Paxton
Abstract:
Tomatoes were grown in greenhouses in Britain during the summer of 1989 and experiments were undertaken to compare the effectiveness of bees in pollinating them. Honeybees and bumblebees were compared with traditional vibration pollination of the tomatoes. The effectiveness of the bees was determined by measuring fruit set, size and weight and seed content. Bumblebees were seen to be effective pollinators of greenhouse tomatoes whereas honeybees were not.
