TRIALS TO REARE BUMBLE BEES

Author:   V. Ptácek
Abstract:
For plant breeding purposes different ways of starting bumble bee colonies were tested: 1. Putting searching queens into hives and their release at the following day. 2. Putting hives with queens into 1 m3 cages with flowering Lamium album L. /the Polish method/. 3. Laboratory method using either young honey bee workers to give the bumble bee queen the social contact or CO2 treatment to break diapause. There are possible combination of methods but only the last one provides for active colonies throughout the year.
