ISHS Acta Horticulturae 288: VI International Symposium on Pollination

BEE FORAGING IN NORTH AND WEST AFRICA

Authors:   F. Damblon, D. Lobreau-Callen
Abstract:
Pollen analysis of 106 honey samples and pellets collected in 6 vegetation zones from the gulf of Guinea up to Morocco emphasizes the main differences in the gathering behaviour of Apis mellifera. The selectivity of bees towards the vegetation layers and the global flora, the collecting of anemophilous taxa and the attractiveness of cultivated plants are discussed. Rather than a genetic determinism of the bees, the structure of the vegetation cover and the flower biology exercise an influence over the gathering behaviour of african bees.
