OCCURRENCE OF LETTUCE BIG VEIN DISEASE IN GREECE

Authors:   K. Tjavella-Klonari, J. Manousopoulos, N. Katis, J.A. Tomlinson, C.M. Clay
Abstract:
Lettuce plants with symptoms similar to those caused by lettuce big vein disease (LBVD) were observed in open field and glasshouse grown lettuces in certain areas of Patras and Thessaloniki (Anchialos and Langadas). Affected plants developed prominent chlorotic vein banding and became ruffled and distorted. These symptoms were usually accompanied by a slight reduction in the size of plants whereas hearting was retarded.

Different stages of Olpidium brassicae (Wor.) Dang (plasmpodia, zoosporangia, resting spores) were always present in the roots of the naturally infected plants. Attempts to reproduce symptoms on indicator plants by sap inoculation were unsuccessfull whereas this was possible by lettuce to lettuce grafting. Disease symptoms were induced in healthy lettuces replanted in soil containing Olpidium brassicae or when healthy plants grown in sterilized soil were watered with a suspension of contaminated. This fungus was always isolated from the roots of symptomatic plants.

Work is in progress to identify the causative agent of the disease.
