Abstract:
The experiments were carried out during two successive growth seasons 1987–1988 and 1988–1989 in El-Kassassin station in the eastern desert, Ismailia Governorate.
This work aims to investigate the effect of two types of polyethylene mulch, e.i., transparent and black, on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and cantaloupe (cucurbita melo var cantaloupensis Naud). All the treatments were done in unheated plastichouses.
The temperature of soil, air, and leaf were recorded regulary.
The vegetative growth, i.e., plant height, leaf number, and leaf area, together with yield, were monitored.
The soil temperature under transparent polyethylene treatment increased at day time compared with the other treatments.
The results were discussed in relation to the local climatic conditions.
