MELON NECROTIC SPOT VIRUS IN PLASTIC HOUSES ON THE ISLAND OF CRETE

Author:   A.D. Avgelis
Abstract:
Melon necrotic spot virus (MNSV) affects seriously melon, watermelon and cucumber plants grown in plastic houses in Crete causing leaf and stem necrosis. Identification of the virus was based on host range, serology and electron microscopy. Virus isolates from cucumber and watermelon were defferentiated from melon isolates on biological and/ or serological properties. MNSV is widespread in plastic house-grown melons throughout the island while MNSV-infection of watermelon and cucumber plants was limited. MNSV is well established in Crete where it represents a potentially serious threat to the local cucurbit industry.
