ISHS Acta Horticulturae 287: II International Symposium on Protected Cultivation of Vegetables in Mild Winter Climates

ACCUMULATIVE EFFECT OF CHELATES ADDITION TO CULTURE SUBSTRATES USED IN COMMERCIAL GREENHOUSES

Authors:   J.J. Lucena, P. García, M. Manzanares, A. Gárate
Abstract:
Substrates commonly used in drip irrigation systems in southeast Spain were allowed to react with different chelate fertilizers. The substrates considered were peats, CaCO3 peats, soils and "enarenado", a mixture of soil, peat and sand. Solution samples were taken and fresh solutions were added six times during a 15-day period. The pH and metal concentrations were determined in the supernatant. The composition of the nutrient solutions is discussed in terms of expected chemical equilibria and sorption phenomena. Equilibrium was not attained due to the short periods of time between sampling, but solutions containing EDTA tended to approach equilibrium. Substrates high in organic matter adsorbed significant amounts of Fe-EDDHA, but the adsorption sites were saturated within a few days.
