ISHS Acta Horticulturae 287: II International Symposium on Protected Cultivation of Vegetables in Mild Winter Climates

THE INFLUENCE OF FOUR ROOTSTOCKS ON SOME MELON HYBRIDS AND A CULTIVAR IN GREENHOUSE

Abstract:
Three melon hybrids (PACIO, SYMPHONY, PAQUITO) and a cultivar (SUPERMARKET) were tested on four rootstocks resistant to Fusarium: RS 841 - ACCENT - BANETTO - KAGO. The test was carried out in south Sardinia in a steel and plastic unsterilized glasshouse, which had already been submitted to four consecutive melon growing cycles. The plants were grown vertically on plastic nets. Harvesting started on 3 May and ended on 17 July 1988. The effect of the rootstock was very significant. There was a sharp increase in yield with PACIO x RS 841 (+310 % versus the control). The other cases also presented a significant yield increase: PAQUITO (+65 %), SYMPHONY (+62 %) SUPERMARKET (+52 %), all x RS 841. The highest unit production and mean weight were obtained with RS 841, which yielded 12.013 Kg/m2 in combination x PACIO. With PAQUITO, RS 841 yielded 10.623 Kg/m2 while the respective control value was 6.855 Kg/m2. An influence on the growth rate of the branches and on the early maturity rate of the crop was observed. The rootstock affected the form of the crop, the size of the placental cavity and the thickness of both mesocarp and esocarp.
