EFFECT OF DACUS CONTROL SPRAYS, BY AIR OR GROUND, ON THE ECOLOGY OF ASPIDIOTUS NERIII BOUCHE (HOM. DIASPIDIDAE)

Author:   V. Alexandrakis
Abstract:
The effect of air sprays for the control of Dacus on the olive scale Aspidiotus nerii and entomophagous insects was investigated during 1986 and 1987 in five areas sprayed by air and in five areas sprayed by ground. The population density of the scale was 1.2 scales per leaf in the areas sprayed by air while in the sprayed by ground areas the density was only 0.7 on average. The percentage of active parasitism was less than 2% in the air sprayed areas while in the sprayed by ground ones it reached 10.2%. Total parasitism was 16% and 22%, in the areas sprayed by air and ground respectively. The mortality of the parasite Aphytis chilensis Howard was always higher in the air sprayed areas. However the observed differences were not significant statistically. Finally the number of insects of A. nerii destroyed by predators and namely by Chilocorus bipustulatus L. was significantly higher in the sprayed by ground areas.
