ISHS Acta Horticulturae 286: International Symposium on Olive Growing

THE INFLUENCE OF AUXILIARY DRIP IRRIGATION, WITH LOW QUANTITIES OF WATER IN OLIVE TREES IN LAS GARRIGAS (CV ARBEQUINA)

Author:   M.A. Solé Riera
Abstract:
An irrigation experiment in olive cv Arbequina was carried out in "Las Garrigas" area (Lleida, Spain). Four doses (0, 60, 120 and 180 l per tree) were applied 8 times from 15 May to 15 September. The experiment began in 1982. Irrigation increased fruit production, oil content, oil production, average fruit weight, growth of branches and number of fruits per tree. The highest dose (180 l/tree) was the most effective from 1983 to 1988 and increased fruit production by 95% relative to the control, oil production by 137%, oil content by 24%, average fruit weight by 50% and annual growth of branches by 32%. Rainfall during May and June and during September, October and November as much as the dose of irrigation were correlated with fruit and oil production. Fruit production influenced oil content and the dose of irrigation modified all parameters.
