ISHS Acta Horticulturae 286: International Symposium on Olive Growing

INCREASED DENSITIES IN TRADITIONAL RAINFED ADULT OLIVE GROVES IN ANDALUSIA

Authors:   M. Pastor, J. Humanes, P. Jiménez
Abstract:
The results of a 15 years survey aimed at studying the viability of increasing the density of rainfed adult olive trees laid out at 14 x 14m in which the initial density (N) was doubled (2N), tripled (3) and quadrupled (4N), are presented. The young trees did not start producing a certain degree of yield until ten years after they were planted. No significant differences between total average yield per hectare with the different densities studied were observed. The young olive trees located in the intersections of the diagonal part of the square formed by four adult olive trees were the ones which grew and produced the most.
