ISHS Acta Horticulturae 286: International Symposium on Olive Growing

THE USE OF FOLIAR FERTILIZATION TO MODIFY SINKS COMPETITION AND TO INCREASE YIELD IN OLIVE (OLEA EUROPAEA CV FRANTOIO)

Authors:   A. Cimato, M. Marranci, M. Tattini
Abstract:
The competition between vegetative and reproductive activities strongly controls the final yield of fruit trees. This phenomenon is of considerable interest in olive culture showing that the olive plant has a naturally reduced reproductive activity. Two years experiments were carried out on the olive cv Frantoio to study the action of foliar nitrogen fertilization on vegetative and reproductive growth. Vegetative and flowering parameters were measured at different times of the growth season; nitrogen status of the plant was also evaluated. The foliar fertilization affected sink competition and improved the yield as a combined result of an increased fruit set and reduced fruit drop.
