ISHS Acta Horticulturae 284: I International Symposium on Walnut Production

SOFT GRAFTING OF WALNUT

Author:   F. SZÓKE
Abstract:
An Efficient quick method of breeding is to collect, select and propagate local varieties. As experts cant asses all the regions of the country, many of the valuable old walnut varieties are in danger to disappear. By an easy grafting method a great number of local cultivars might be preserved.

The soft grafting of walnut can be done in privat gardens and on commercial scale aswell.

The stock should be a 1–2 month old seedling, but 1–3 year old - unsuccessfully grafted - stocks can be regrafted, too. The method is the cleft graftage. Very important factors are:

  • to prevent the scion from water loss
  • the right developmental stage of the scion
  • and the right grafting time.
