STUDIES ON THE VEGETATIVE PROPAGATION OF WALNUT. UNDER DRY TEMPERATE CONDITIONS OF HIMACHAL PRADESH

Abstract:
The studies on walnut propagation were carried out at Regional Horticultural Research St-ation, Sharbo, District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh in India. This station is located in North Western Himalayas at an altitude of 2200 m above mean sea level. The average rainfall is about 800mm per annum and average temperature ranges between -10°C in January and 30°C in July and weather remains practically dry during summer.

Five methods viz. tongue, cleft, cleft at collar level, veneer grafting and patch budding were tried in three local thin shelled selection and in Govinda, Kashmir Budded and Kashmir seedling. The first three methods were attempted in 1st week of April whereas veneer grafting and patch budding in the 1st week of July. The seedlings of one year age of local walnuts (Juglans regia) were used as rootstock for the present studies. It revealed from the data recorded during 1987 that patch budding gave highest mean values for bud take (45.98%) was obtained in Kashmir seedling with patch budding. The mean values with other methods ranged from 16.94 to 43.99 per cent for bud take and from 13.14 to 28.48 per cent for success. The experiment is still under progress and results for the year 1989 shall also be presented in the paper.
