INTRODUCTION AND FEASIBILITY OF MACADAMIA CULTURE IN ITALY

Abstract:
In 1985 a program to study the feasibility of Macadamia introduction and culture in Italy was begun, according to the following schedule:
  1. During 1985, collection and review of world literature on Macadamia
  2. Macadamia nut is one of the finest nut in the world, and one of the highly priced in world nut market, more than Pistachio nut
  3. Identification of Macadamia tetraphylla cultivars most widely planted; Macadamia tetraphylla is considered as cool subtropical, while Macadamia integrifolia is best suited to the tropics
  4. Identification, in South Italy, of the environments, suitable for this species, native in Australia
  5. Contacts, in 1986, with californian south, african, australian and israelian specialists, and U.S. Macadamia Society for information and in view of introduction of the best cultivars, budded or grafted trees.
  6. Realization, in 1987 in South Italy, of a variety testing trial
  7. Evaluation of cultivars performance in our environment.
