CULTIVAR RESPONSE TO TIME OF IN SITU GRAFTING OF ENGLISH WALNUTS ON HARD-SHELLED ROOTSTOCK |

| Abstract:
To determine the suitable time of grafting, four genotypes of walnuts were grafted in early spring on hard-shelled rootstocks at Horticulture Research Station, Kirtipur. The optimum time of grafting appeared to be late February and early March for higher percentage of success, and girth and height development. 'Thinshelled' walnut, a local cultivar, showed 40% or more grafting success whereas 'Payne', 'Franquette' and Ashley had about 14 to 24% success. Grafting early in the season (1st week of February) was a complete failure. The maximum girth and height of the grafts four months after grafting were 1.37 cm and 65.1 cm measured at and from the union point. In situ grafting of walnut also resulted in less incidence of crown gall infestation compared to bench grafting. | |
