Abstract:
An appraisal of walnut culture in temperate regions of India, its importance and position together with some historical facets has been compiled. Compulsions that account for present low productivity and inferior quality have been observed to be of production, protection and processing nature. Among the production problems, non-availability of suitable root-stocks and superior scion strains; lack of standard propagation techniques and inadequate knowledge of cultural practices have been identified and discussed. The protection problem include non-availability of proper plant protection machinary, water, plant protection chemicals and gaps in knowledge of pests and diseases of walnuts. Processing constrains, at present are by-for the most important factors that contribute to low returns.
