ISHS Acta Horticulturae 284: I International Symposium on Walnut Production

WALNUT MICROPROPAGATION

Authors:   R. GRUSELLE, P. BOXUS
Abstract:
Walnut trees are economically important fruit and wood trees but they are difficult to propagate by vegetative methods.

This paper explains our current research on the micropropagation of different species of Juglans : J. regia, J. nigra, J. cinerea and a rootstock called Paradox.

The initiation of the culture is obtained by using a modified MS medium containing BAP : 0,5 mg/1. For the proliferation, we increase the macroelements (full strength) and BAP : 0,8 – 1,0 mg/1.

The clusters are transferred on an "elongation" medium for 3 weeks, after that the microcuttings are rooted on the DKW medium containing IBA: 2,0 mg/1 and Riboflavin : 1,0 mg/1, and a 10 days darkness period is applied.

After 4 – 5 weeks the plantlets are transferred in a 2 compost : 1 sand mix (V/V) and covered with a plastic folie.
