PHENOLOGICAL AND POMOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF WALNUT CULTIVARS IN NORTHEASTERN SLOVENIA

Author:   A. Solar
Abstract:
Studies on the phenological and pomological characteristics of some walnut cultivars were carried out on the 14–17 year old walnut plantation in Maribor, northeastern Slovenia (latitude 46°33') and longitude 15°39'). The beginning of the phenophase vegetation of the cv. G-1247 was recorded on 19 April and of the cv. MB-24 on 12 May. The earliest signs of leaf fall were noted on the cv. G-1247 on 19 October, the latest on the cv. MB-24 on 2 November. On 4 May the first female flowers appeared on the cv. G-1247, while the female flowers on the cv. MB-24 appeared on 23 May. Catkins flowered between 4 May on the cv. G-1239 and 17 May on the cv. Elit. Flowering of the cvs. Elit, G-139, Killinger, G-26, Concord, G-1247 and Petovio was partly homogamous, while the flowering of the other cvs. was protogynous or protandrous. The nut produced on the cv. G-120 was the heaviest weighing 13.40 g, and the nut on the cv. Šejnovo the lightest weighing 9.00 g. The percentage of the kernel content was the highest on the cv. Sejnovo amounting to 55,22 % and MB-24 with 53,77 %; the lowest was recorded for the cv. G-120 amounting to 42,84 % and G-139 amounting to 42,91%. The cvs. MB-24, Elit, G-139 and Mayette got the best estimation for the colour of the kernel, while the taste of the kernel was the best on the cvs. Elit, Petovio, MB-24, Mayette, G-120, Parisienne and G-139.
