Abstract:
The appropriate choice of parental material is essential for a successful breeding program.
Beginning in 1984/85 we in Wädenswil used the results of variety testing work to initiate a small breeding program aimed at breeding new early and late maturing European plum varieties for fresh consumption.
Preference was given to selfincompatible varieties as female parents.
The following varieties were used as parents: Auerbacher, Belle de Paris (Bonne de Bry), Chrudimer, Cacaks Early, Opal, Ortenauer, President, Prune d'Ente, Richards Early Italian, Ruth Gerstetter, Schwabs, Zimmers and FAW 1/41 (Zimmers x Italian Prune).
Besides different tree characters the following fruit characters of the donors were observed: harvest time, fruit size (weight), appearance, texture (firmness), juiciness, flavor, freeness of stone, cracking resistance, soluble solids, acidity and anthocyanins in the skin.
In an additional survey, the storage potential of a few late maturing varieties was examined.
