Abstract:
The crosses were done as a part of programme of varietal development for table plums.
The objectives were as follows:
- earlier or later ripening than Greengage,
- improved regular production,
- flavour of fruit equal or superior to Greengage.
This group of hybrids was observed for six to eight years of fructification.
Some fifty hybrids taken from these crosses were selected for further study in stage B. They were followed under different geoclimatic conditions: INRA domains, regional experiment Centers and CTIFL, etc.
The principal agronomic characteristics of these selections were:
- the period of ripening which ranged from July 10 to September 15,
- the average weight of the fruit, above 30 grams and reaching 55 to 60 grams,
- the form and colour of the fruit (round, oblong, yellow-green to violet-red),
- the level and regularity of production,
- the flavour, evaluated as a funcion of the sugar content of the fruit.
Other hybrids issued from different crosses were studied.
Two of these may be proposed soon for inscription in the Official French Catalogue.
