ISHS Acta Horticulturae 283: IV International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetics, Breeding and Pomology

PRELIMINARY REPORT ON SUSCEPTIBILITY IN PLUM CULTIVARS TO XANTHOMONAS CAMPESTRIS PV. PRUNI BY FORCED NATURAL INFECTION

Authors:   A.M. Simeone, M. Scortichini
Abstract:
An experimental orchard including 16 Japanese cultivars and 2 European cultivars (4 randomized trees for each cultivar) grafted on Myrobolan, was established in March 1987, to investigate the susceptibility of plum cultivars to Xanthomonas campestris pv. pruni. Trees were spaced 3.5 x 3.5 meter, trained as open center and drop irrigated.

In order to get a higher and more durable infection, for each block three trees of "Calita", known as very susceptible, were also planted. An isolate of X. pruni at 1x108 colony forming units/ml was sprayed in April 1988 on the canopies of "Calita" trees. After 1 month it was possible to observe on the leaves of this cultivar the first symptoms of bacterial infection.

A screening was carried out in winter to check the presence of bacterial stem cankers.

The new Californian cultivars (Group "Black" and "Angeleno") were all susceptible to X. pruni. Prunus domestica L. cultivars showed a minor susceptibility to the disease. The following cultivars showed the bacterial stem cankers in winter: "Angeleno", "Black Amber", "Black Diamond", "Black Star", "Calita", "Casselman", "Morettini 355", "Pobeda", "Shiro".
