ISHS Acta Horticulturae 283: IV International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetics, Breeding and Pomology

BEHAVIOUR OF PLUM VARIETIES AND ROOTSTCOKS TOWARDS VIRUSES

Authors:   F. DOSBA, K. MAZY, M. LANSAC, F. DUTRANNOY, J.P. EYQUARD, G. SALESSES
Abstract:
Different interspecific hybrids, selected as rootstocks, and their parents have been tested towards the four main viruses of Prunus: PPV, ACLSV, PNRSV and PDV. After inoculation by chip budding on the rooted cuttings, the plants were followed by ELISA during two or three years. Althought there were no evident symptoms, the viruses multiplied in the plants.

In the same way, two trials have been studied to precised the incidence of viruses on varieties of Prunes and Greengages grafted on different rootstocks. Two varieties, one of Prune 'P 2733' and one of Greengage 'P 1380' grafted on P. cerasifera 'P 18' have been studied for their behaviour towards respectively 16 and 15 strains of ILAR viruses.

Very little effect have been observed on Greengage either for the growth or for the fruit production. On Prune 'P 2733', some viruses have decreased significantly the fruit production but have no effect upon the growth.

Another trial led on French prune 'GF 707' grafted on P. cerasifera 'P 1254' and inoculated with ACLSV, PDV or PNRSV had been observed the significant effect of PNRSV upon the production have been shown.

The incidence of viruses on different Prunus rootstocks and varieties is discussed.
