Abstract:
This paper illustrates the main taxonomic and bioagronomic characteristics of a selection isolated by Prof.
Scaramuzzi in the 1960s from Myrobalan seedling populations, which appears highly promising as rootstock: the "Mr.S.2/5".
Its genetic origin is not yet clear: considered a spontaneous hybrid of Myrobalan, morphological parameters suggest it to be a very close relation of the European group of plum.
Trials carried out over several years in laboratory conditions and in the open field have revealed a good response to low drainage soils and even waterlogging, and to calcareous soils. "Mr.S.2/5" is also easily propagated both by traditional methods and by in vitro culture.
