ISHS Acta Horticulturae 281: II Workshop on Greenhouse Construction and Design

OPTIMIZATION OF LIGHT TRANSMISSION IN MODERN GREENHOUSES

Authors:   A. Jaffrin, L. Urban
Abstract:
Light transmission through the covers of different types of greenhouses is analysed. In glasshouses, the main factors which influence the light level are the orientation of roof slopes and the distribution of opaque structures. Optical measurements show that the highest transmission rate for direct sun radiation from late october to early march is obtained with East to West orientation of ridges and North to South orientation of auxiliary structures. Plastic greenhouses with inflated roofs oppose little opaque structure to light but the double film has a reduced transparency in the presence of condensation. The use of highly wettable films can dramatically improve the situation.
