Abstract:
Does the antibacterial activity of certain substances codified by insect genes increase the resistance to bacterial diseases in horticultural crops? To answer this question we explored the possibility of transferring antibacterial genes into potato, by using genetically engineered strains of Agrobacterium rhizogenes. We infected potato leaf discs (cv.
Desirée) with different strains of A. rhizogenes carrying genes coding for the synthesis of potent antibacterial substances isolated from insects (lysozyme, attacins and cecropins). The recovering of the "hairy roots" induced by A. rhizogenes allowed the isolation of root lines in liquid culture.
Through dedifferentiation and regeneration passages, shoot lines were obtained and maintained in vitro.
