Abstract:
Researchers have striven, often without success, to eliminate all microorganisms from plant tissue cultures.
It is questionable whether truly axenic cultures are achieved even in apparently “clean” in vitro systems.
Recent studies have indicated that plant tissues can be successfully cultured in the presence of bacterial and/or fungal inoculants or contaminants.
In some cases, the presence of microorganisms has resulted in unexpected improvements in the cultures, including stimulation of organogenesis and regeneration of sturdier plantlets with better root systems and improved transplant tolerance.
