FIELD EVALUATION OF ANDROGENETIC LINES OF EGGPLANT

Authors:   M.C. Sanguineti, R. Tuberosa, S. Conti
Abstract:
Eighteen eggplant dihaploids derived through anther culture and the corresponding parental lines were evaluated in a replicated field trial. The five dihaploids established from inbred lines, when compared to the latter, showed no significant difference, with the exception of early yield which was higher in two dihaploids. Among the F1-hybrid-derived dihaploids, twelve were characterized by yield values higher than the parental mean. This yield advantage (+21.4%) was due to an increase (+31.8%) in number of fruits/plant associated with a slight reduction (-9.6%) in fruit weight. Higher yielding parents were significantly outyielded by four dihaploids as to total yield and by six dihaploids as to early yield. The results of this work indicate that it is possible to establish anther-derived dihaploids from F1 hybrids suitable for practical breeding purposes.
