ISHS Acta Horticulturae 280: I International Symposium on In Vitro Culture and Horticultural Breeding

COMPARATIVE STUDIES ON IN VITRO REGENERATION OF SEEDLING EXPLANTS IN CHILI PEPPER (CAPSICUM ANNUUM L.)

Authors:   M. Fári, Z. Túry, Mrs. F. Csillag
Abstract:
Seven cultivars of chili pepper (milling type) and two important breeding lines of our collection were compared for regeneration ability of different excised organs of seedlings raised in vitro. The explants (cotyledon, shoot-tip, apical and basal section of the hypocotyl) were placed on two culture media differing in their content of growth substances.

Total number of combinations was 72 (cultivars x media x type of explant); each was represented by two plastic containers (VegBox) with ten explants each. Shoot bud regeneration potential was comparable with those peppers reported in the literature. In all cases IAA stimulated shoot bud regeneration, but some moderate organisation was observed even without IAA.

The best regeneration phenomena were observed on the cotyledon leaves, and the regeneration ability decreased from the shoot-tip towards the base of hypocotyl. In vitro produced plants were succesfully acclimated to greenhouse conditions.
