BUD-UNION DEVELOPMENT OF APPLE VARIETY 'ANNA' ON MM 106 AND DOCYNIA STOCKS AND NUTRIENT LEVELS VARIATION OF 'ANNA' ON DOCYNIA

Authors:   V. Suriyapananont, S. Suriyapananont
Abstract:
Formation of the bud-union was observed for chip buds of 'Anna' on 'MM 106' and Docynia rootstocks. The stages in formation of the bud-union were as follows : (1) Pre-callus, where 6 and 3 days after budding of 'Anna'/'MM 106' and 'Anna'/Docynia only a wound periderm was observed. (2) Callus, formation was found 26 and 20 days after budding of 'Anna'/'MM 106' and 'Anna'/Docynia respectively. (3) Proliferation from tissues near the cambium and cortex; cambium layers from stock and vascular tissues were differentiated within 33–45 days after budding. (4) The healed union, where the callus tissue completely filled the space between stock and scion of the graft was then formed in the combination of 'Anna'/'MM 106'. A new meristematic center (vascular nodule) was initiated in callus tissue between stock and scion as a result of budding.

The concentration of nutrients in the leaves of 'Anna' was low when budded on to the Docynia rootstock as compared to the combination of 'Anna'/'MM 106'. The levels of K, Ca, and Mg were lower in the scion bark but unchanged in the rootstock bark. The N and P concentration in the leaves were low when Docynia was used a rootstock.
