THE EFFECT OF ROOTSTOCK ON THE CHILLING REQUIREMENT OF 'NIJUSEIKI' PEAR (PYRUS PYRIFOLIA NAKAI) |

| Abstract:
Six pear cultivars grafted on Pyrus pyrifolia cv. Heng Shan, an extremely low chilling requirement variety, did not have their chilling requirement reduced by the rootstock, when evaluated by bud break delay. P. communis, P. betulaefolia and P. calleryana, with high, medium and low chilling requirements, respectively, were used as rootstocks for 'Nijuseiki' Japanese pear (P. pyrifolia). When we evaluated the chilling requirement for 'Nijuseiki' pear by time of bud break and total shoot growth, we found no influence from the rootstock. These results are confirmed by the observation that commercial production of 'Shinseiki' and 'Nijuseiki' pears at low elevations in Taiwan is not improved by grafting unchilled scions of these cultivars on P. pyrifolia cv. Heng Shan. | |
