Abstract:
The pear breeding program at Zhejiang Agricultural University started in 1955. The objective of the program was to develop new varieties mainly from the species Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai for the subtropical areas of the Yangtze Valley.
Four varieties and a number of selections have been developed from the program.
Two of them are well-accepted and have become major varieties in southern China.
The research has been done with the results on inheritance of fruit characters, precocious bearing and pre-selection of desirable traits.
An approach to the development of pear seedlings has exposed a new area of study on juvenility, and some ideas and concepts proposed would be helpful to fruit breeding.
