PRODUCTION OF ORIENTAL PEAR AT LOW LATITUDES

Abstract: Production of oriental pear at low latitudes has encounted non-uniform budbreak due to insufficient winter chilling, as well as overgrowth resulting in poor flower bud development due to high temperature and rainfall. To overcome these difficulties, the following measures were tested and found tangible in subtropical (24°N) Taiwan viz. Adoption of varieties with lower chilling requirements, such as Hengshan. Rest avoidance by fall pruning before regular winter leaf fall. Grafting a chilled scion with floral bud onto a water shoot of low chilling cultivar, grown in the lowland. Application of a chemical rest breaking agents such as hydrogen cyanamide. Enhancement of floral bud development, mainly through reduced vegetative growth by horizontal training, timely topping or twisting of vigorous twigs, as well as application of anti-GA agents.
