Abstract:
Recently, many Italian Regional Administrations have organized local agrometeorological services but most of these projects are still in the pre-operative phase.
A first network of meteorological stations, created to supply information for the agricultural management, started in the Po river valley (Piacenza Province) in 1982. The services offered by the network concern general weather forecasting, pest control, agronomical advice on optimal timing for sowing, fertilizing and harvesting, and monitoring of irrigation requirements of the main crops grown in the area.
From 1984, a more extended project covers the Emilia-Romagna Region with a Meteorological Service having multi-tasking objectives.
Applications in irrigation scheduling (called Experimental Program for Information to the Irrigation User ) were organized.
Problems causing possible errors in the irrigation scheduling are examined.
While a certain degree of error must be considered in an "open air industry", subject to environmental and biological variability, major causes of bias should be avoided.
