ISHS Acta Horticulturae 278: Symposium on Scheduling of Irrigation for Vegetable Crops under Field Condition

MAXIMUM EVAPOTRANSPIRATION (ETM) AND AGRONOMICAL MAXIMUM EVAPOTRANSPIRATION (ETMA) OF PROCESSING TOMATO AND POTATO IN THE VENETO ENVIRONMENT

Authors:   L. Giardini, M. Borin
Abstract:
Two trials were carried out on the response of potato (cv. Monalisa) and processing tomato (cv. Rio Grande) to the evapotranspiration regime.

Both crops gave the best technical and agronomical result (maximum marketable yield) at ET levels inferior to the maximum one, respectively of 6.1% and 7.2% on potato and tomato. This ET regimen has been defined as “agronomical maximum evapotranspiration”, ETma, that is the value of ET, often less than ETm, that allows to obtain the optimal technical result among those obtainable, managing only on the water supply.

The corp coefficients valid for the FAO Blaney-Criddle formula have been calculated with reference to ETm and ETma: on potato, those referring to ETma were inferior to the others during the stages of yield formation and ripening; on tomato, the difference between crop coefficients for ETm and ETma appeared only during ripening.
