Abstract:
The two components of the evapotranspiration (ET) process were estimated by using a simulation model which computes transpiration (T) and evaporation from the soil (E) separately.
Data from experiments using open microlysimeters were also used to estimate the E and T components of the ET of processing tomatoes at Davis, California.
The results suggest that for mediterranean climates, E is a relatively small component of the ET of irrigated, summer vegetable crops (about 25 percent for processing tomatoes) and that it does not vary very much in response to frequency or method of irrigation.
An empirical function to estimate T in several vegetable crops as a function of percent ground cover is presented.
