ISHS Acta Horticulturae 278: Symposium on Scheduling of Irrigation for Vegetable Crops under Field Condition

THE PARTITIONING OF EVAPOTRANSPIRATION INTO EVAPORATION AND TRANSPIRATION FOR THE IRRIGATION SCHEDULING OF VEGETABLE CROPS

Authors:   E. Fereres, F.J. Villalobos
Abstract:
The two components of the evapotranspiration (ET) process were estimated by using a simulation model which computes transpiration (T) and evaporation from the soil (E) separately. Data from experiments using open microlysimeters were also used to estimate the E and T components of the ET of processing tomatoes at Davis, California. The results suggest that for mediterranean climates, E is a relatively small component of the ET of irrigated, summer vegetable crops (about 25 percent for processing tomatoes) and that it does not vary very much in response to frequency or method of irrigation. An empirical function to estimate T in several vegetable crops as a function of percent ground cover is presented.
