Abstract:
Results of a five-year potato-irrigation field test conducted in the Emilia-Romagna Region are reported.
Crop water requirements were calculated from Class A pan evaporation data.
The yield/volume crop curve, determined from a comparison of MET levels (%) against non-irrigated control, enabled water balance to be calculated for a large number of farms in the area.
Planting density, cultivars and nitrogen and potassium inputs were also tested to determine their response to irrigation.
The study's findings, including the effect of irrigation on tuber size, are being employed to develop a pilot irrigation scheduling service for growers.
