Abstract:
A new system for mist irrigation was devised to prevent the drawbacks occurred in previous years.
Electric power supply was excluded in order to make the system independent of any black-out or any temporary failure.
Pile and rechargeable batteries were used, the mist irrigation timing was made more uniform, low voltage connections were as few as possible.
This system was used on a four-year-old artichoke field to which the first irrigation of 1000 m3 ha-1 was applied on 4 July, 1988 in the experimental field "E. Pantanelli" of Policoro (MT), Italy.
The trial covered 6 m wide strips with six plants and no missing plants.
Two automatic mist irrigation treatments at 24 and 26 °C were compared.
A plot control was added.
Plants were grown with two offshoots.
The system has been operating from 25 August to 15 September.
Water supply was measured through volume meters.
The head picking was made from 29 September to 25 October 1988.
Head atrophy was of 13 – 29 and 42% respectively for the treatments at 24 – 26°C and the control plot.
