Abstract:
The fitting of a mathematical model, reported in literature, for simulating the soil moisture content is being studied in Southern Italy.
The field research has been carried out on a well irrigated tomato crop.
During the growing season, meteorological variables and soil moisture profile have been recorded from well-irrigated plots in which neutron probe tubes have been installed up to 100 cm depth.
For simulating the soil water content, the model needs meteorological data and some functions previously obtained for the same crop (LAI, root development, crop height) and soil (retention curve, water conductivity).
The results have shown a good agreement between the simulated soil moisture profile and the measured one, especially in the deepest layers of the soil.
The highest differences have been observed, only in some days, in the 30 cm laye deep.
To improve the validity of the model one suggests to modify the function of the root absorption.
